and the like.

In the two Ṣaḥīḥs it is related from Jābir that when the verse was revealed,
“Say: He is able to send down upon you a punishment from above you,” ⦗6:65⦘
the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, “I seek refuge in Your Countenance.”

Then when the words were revealed,
“or from beneath your feet,” ⦗6:65⦘
he again said, “I seek refuge in Your Countenance.”

And when the words were revealed,
“or He may divide you into factions and let some of you taste the might of others,” ⦗6:65⦘
he said, “These two are lighter, or easier.”

Likewise, in another report found in the two Ṣaḥīḥs the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
“I asked my Lord for three things. He granted me two of them and withheld one. I asked Him not to destroy my community with a widespread famine, and He granted that. I asked Him not to place over them an enemy from outside themselves who would root them out, and He granted that. And I asked Him not to make their violence among themselves, but He withheld it.
