he placed it between his shoulders. They burst into laughter and began leaning on one another, while I stood watching; had I possessed the strength I would have cast it from the back of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, remained in prostration and did not raise his head until someone went to Fāṭimah. She came—still a young girl—removed it, then turned toward them and scolded them. When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, finished his prayer, he raised his voice and invoked against them. Whenever he supplicated, he would do so three times, and whenever he asked, he would ask three times.
Then he said:
“O Allah, deal with Quraysh,”
three times. When they heard his voice the laughter died away, and they were afraid of his supplication. He then said:
“O Allah, deal with Abū Jahl ibn Hishām, ʿUtbah ibn Rabīʿah, Shaybah ibn Rabīʿah, al-Walīd ibn ʿUtbah, Umayyah ibn Khalaf, and ʿUqbah ibn Abī Muʿayṭ,” and he mentioned a seventh whose name I cannot recall. By the One who sent Muhammad with the truth, I saw those he named lying slain.
