Muhammad ibn Ishaq said: Yazid ibn Ruman narrated to us, from ʿUrwah and other scholars, that Gabriel came to the Prophet—may peace and blessings be upon him—while they were circumambulating the Kaʿbah. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, stood at his side.

Al-Aswad ibn al-Muṭṭalib passed by, whereupon Gabriel cast a green leaf into his face and he went blind. Then al-Aswad ibn ʿAbd Yaghūth walked past; Gabriel pointed to his stomach, and he developed dropsy and died from it. Al-Walid ibn al-Mughīrah next came by; Gabriel pointed to a scratch on the lower part of his ankle—an insignificant wound he had received when he passed a man fletching his arrows—but the injury became inflamed and he died. Finally al-ʿĀṣ ibn Wāʾil passed, and Gabriel pointed to the arch of his foot.

He (Muhammad ibn Ishaq) then mentioned the same details as were previously cited in the narration of Ibn ʿAbbās. Abū Zurʿah also transmitted the report through numerous chains from a group of the Successors. Well known among the biographers and others is the Prophet’s supplication against ʿUtaybah ibn Abī Lahab.
