al-Qāsim; go forth rightly, for by Allah you have never been ignorant.”

So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, turned away. The next morning they gathered once more in the Hijr, and I was with them. One of them said to the others, “You have been talking about how much he has offended you and what you have heard from him, yet when he faced you with what you dislike you simply let him go.”

While they were still saying this, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, appeared. They leapt toward him as one man, surrounded him, and said, “Are you the one who says such-and-such?”—alluding to what had reached them of his denunciation of their gods and their religion.

He replied, “Yes, I am the one who says that.”

I saw a man among them seize the front of his cloak, but Abu Bakr stepped in front of him, weeping as he said, “Would you kill a man for saying, ‘My Lord is Allah’?” (Q 40:28). Then they left him.

Al-Bukhari, after relating the report of ʿUrwah from ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAmr, added: “ʿAbdah said: …”

الْقَاسِمِ، انْصَرِفْ رَاشِدًا، فَوَاللَّهِ مَا كُنْتَ جَهُولًا. فَانْصَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ مِنَ الْغَدِ اجْتَمَعُوا فِي الْحِجْرِ وَأَنَا مَعَهُمْ فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ: ذَكَرْتُمْ مَا بَلَغَ مِنْكُمْ، وَمَا بَلَغَكُمْ عَنْهُ، حَتَّى إِذَا بَادَاكُمْ بِمَا تَكْرَهُونَ تَرَكْتُمُوهُ. فَبَيْنَمَا هُمْ فِي ذَلِكَ طَلَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَوَثَبُوا إِلَيْهِ وَثْبَةَ رَجُلٍ وَاحِدٍ فَأَحَاطُوا بِهِ يَقُولُونَ لَهُ: أَنْتَ الَّذِي تَقُولُ كَذَا وَكَذَا، لِمَا كَانَ يَبْلُغُهُمْ عَنْهُ مِنْ عَيْبِ آلِهَتِهِمْ وَدِينِهِمْ. قَالَ: فَيَقُولُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: " نَعَمْ أَنَا الَّذِي أَقُولُ ذَلِكَ " . قَالَ: فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَجُلًا مِنْهُمْ أَخَذَ بِمَجْمَعِ رِدَائِهِ، وَقَامَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ دُونَهُ يَقُولُ وَهُوَ يَبْكِي {أَتَقْتُلُونَ رَجُلًا أَنْ يَقُولَ رَبِّيَ اللَّهُ} [غافر: ٢٨] ثُمَّ انْصَرَفُوا عَنْهُ» وَذَكَرَ الْبُخَارِيُّ بَعْدَ حَدِيثِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ: وَقَالَ عَبْدَةُ:
