In the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections it is related from Anas ibn Mālik:

“A man who had been a Christian embraced Islam. He recited Sūrat al-Baqarah and Sūrat Āl ʿImrān, and he used to write for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Later he returned to Christianity and began saying, ‘Muhammad knows nothing except what I have written for him.’ The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, then supplicated:

‘O Allah, make him a sign.’

Allah caused him to die, and the next morning the earth had cast his body out. People said, ‘This is Muhammad and his Companions; when he escaped from them they dug up our companion and threw him away.’ They therefore dug him a grave, as deep as they could, yet the following morning the earth had cast him out again. They repeated the same accusation, dug him an even deeper grave, and once more the earth expelled him on the third morning. They then realized that this was not the work of human beings, so they left him lying exposed.”

Imām Aḥmad also records, on the authority of Ibn Isḥāq who said: “Yaḥyā ibn ʿUrwah narrated to me from his father, from ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ:

‘I asked him, “What is the gravest harm you saw Quraysh inflict upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in the hostility they openly displayed toward him?” He replied, “I was present when they had gathered…”’
