of a whip cracking above him, and the voice of a rider calling out, “Advance, Ḥayzūm!” He looked at the idolater ahead of him and saw that the man suddenly toppled over on his back. When he examined him, he found that his nose had been pierced and his face split open as though by the stroke of a whip, the whole injury having turned greenish-black.

The Ansari went and related what he had witnessed to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, who said, “You have spoken the truth; that was help from the third heaven.”

On that day they killed 70 men and captured 70, and the rest of the hadith continues.

Al-Bukhari, in his version of this report, adds that the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—came out reciting: “The host will be routed and will turn their backs.” (al-Qamar 54:45)
