while he was astride his mule, leaning forward on it as though reaching out to engage them in combat. The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—then said, “Now the heat of battle is at its fiercest.” Next, he picked up a few small stones and cast them into the faces of the unbelievers, after which he proclaimed, “By the Lord of the Ka‘bah, they have been routed!”
The narrator continues: “I went off to observe, and to my eyes the fighting still seemed to be raging as before. Yet, by Allah, no sooner had he thrown those pebbles at them than I saw their edge grow dull and their ranks turn in retreat, until Allah routed them completely.
Concerning the Day of Badr, Allah the Exalted has said:
‘You did not throw when you threw; it was Allah who threw.’ (Al-Anfal 8:17).”
