your hand into it, and do not overturn it lest it be overturned on you.’

He [Abū Hurayrah] said:
‘I never wished for dates thereafter but that I would reach in and take from it fifty wasqs for the cause of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. The satchel used to hang behind my back, but during the time of ʿUthmān it was lost.’

It was also narrated through the route of Yazīd ibn Abī Manṣūr, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:
‘I was struck by three calamities: the death of the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—while I had been his close companion and small servant; the murder of ʿUthmān; and the loss of the satchel. And what was the satchel? We were with the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—when the people were overtaken by hunger.

The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said to me, “Do you have anything, Abū Hurayrah?”

I replied, “Yes—some dates in a satchel.”

He said, “Bring it to me.” I brought it to him, he put in his hand, drew out a handful, and spread it out.

Then he said, “Call ten men.” They ate until they were full. He put his hand in again, drew out another handful, and spread it out,

then said, “Call ten more.” He continued in this way until he had fed the whole army and they were satisfied.

Then he said, “Take back what you brought, and whenever you need something, insert your hand and take a handful, and do not—”
