Bukhari likewise relates—again on the authority of Anas—that Umm Sulaym took one mud of barley, ground it, and from it prepared a simple dish (khaṭīfah). She then squeezed the contents of a small skin-bag (ʿukkah) of clarified butter she had and sent me to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. I found him sitting among his Companions and conveyed her invitation.

He said, “And those who are with me?”

So I went back and told her, “He is asking: And those who are with me?”

Abu Ṭalḥah then went out and said, “O Messenger of Allah, it is only something Umm Sulaym has prepared.” The Prophet came with him, the food was brought, and he said, “Let ten enter.” He kept doing so until he had counted forty. Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, ate; when he rose, I kept looking to see whether anything of it had diminished.

Samurah ibn Jundub reported: “We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, passing around a large bowl from morning until night; ten would stand up and another ten would sit down.

We asked, ‘With what was it being replenished?’

He said, ‘Why are you amazed? It was not…’
