Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported:

“We were travelling with the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—when the people’s provisions ran out, and they were on the verge of slaughtering some of their mounts. ’Umar said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, why not gather whatever supplies remain and then pray for Allah’s blessing upon them?’

The Prophet did so. Those who had wheat brought their wheat, those who had dates brought their dates, and those who had nothing but date-stones brought their stones. Someone asked, ‘What use were the date-stones?’ He answered, ‘They would suck on them and then drink water.’

He then invoked blessings over the collected food until everyone had refilled his provision bag. At that point he proclaimed, ‘I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that I am the Messenger of Allah. Whoever meets Allah affirming these two, without harboring any doubt, will enter Paradise.’”

In another wording he said:

“On the day of the Expedition of Tabuk the people were struck by famine. They said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, if you would allow us to slaughter our draught camels, we could eat their meat and use their fat.’ The Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—replied, ‘Go ahead.’

Then ’Umar came and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, if you do that, the riding beasts will become scarce.’ In yet another narration he said, ‘What will remain for them…’”
