Then he said, “Admit another ten.” They were admitted until everyone present had eaten and was satisfied—the group numbered seventy or eighty men in all. In the transmission preserved by al-Bukhari the number is given as eighty.

Another narration states: “After that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—ate, together with Abu Talhah, Umm Sulaym, and Anas; some food was still left over, so we sent it as a gift to our neighbors.”

Muslim relates, on the authority of Salamah, who said:

“We were with the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—during the expedition to Khaybar. He ordered us to gather what was left of our provisions—meaning dates. He spread out a leather mat and we scattered our supplies upon it. I straightened up, craned my neck, and estimated the heap to be about the space a sheep occupies when it is sitting, while we were fourteen hundred men. We ate, then I straightened up again and looked, and I still estimated it to be about the space a sitting sheep occupies.”

Both Sahihs record a similar report from Abu Hurayrah, Abu Saʿid, and Salamah ibn al-Akwāʿ—the wording here is Muslim’s—on the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:
