I then saw the last man among us being hauled out by his cloak for fear that he might drown, and the water had overflowed all around.

In another narration—preserved by Imām Aḥmad, al-Tirmidhī, Abū Dāwūd, and Ibn Mājah—in which only a portion is transmitted from Ziyād ibn al-Ḥārith al-Sudaʾī, he relates at its close:

“Later we said, ‘Prophet of Allah, we have a well whose water suffices us in winter so that we gather around it, but when summer comes its water dwindles and we scatter to the surrounding water-holes. We have embraced Islam, yet everyone around us is an enemy. Pray to Allah that our well’s water may be ample for us, so we may stay together and not be forced to disperse.’

He asked for seven small stones, rolled them between his palms, and supplicated over them. Then he said, ‘Take these pebbles. When you reach the well, drop them in one by one, mentioning the name of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.’

Al-Sudaʾī continues: ‘We did exactly as he instructed us, and after that we were never again able to see the bottom of the well.’
