In the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections it is related from Abū Qatādah who said:

“The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, addressed us and declared, ‘You will travel in the late afternoon and through the night, and tomorrow—God willing—you will reach water.’ The people therefore set off, each man hurrying on without waiting for anyone else, and the incident of our falling asleep in the valley was mentioned.

He then called for the small water-skin (miḍaʾah) I was carrying, which held a little water. From it he performed a light ablution, using little water,and some water still remained. He then said to me, ‘Guard your water-skin for us, for it will soon have a role to play.’

Morning came and the people found that their Prophet was not with them. Abū Bakr and ʿUmar said, ‘The Messenger of Allah is giving you a promise; he would never fail you.’ The people added, ‘The Messenger of Allah is ahead of you; if you obey Abū Bakr and ʿUmar you will be rightly guided.’

We finally caught up with them when the day had grown long and everything was scorching hot, and they were crying out, ‘Messenger of Allah, we are perishing from thirst!’ He said:”}
