when the first light of dawn appeared we halted to rest, but sleep overcame us until the sun had already risen. The first among us to wake was Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq. We never used to rouse the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, from his sleep; we waited for him to awake of his own accord, since we did not know what might occur to him while he slept. ʿUmar then awoke and began pronouncing the takbīr aloud until the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, awoke. When he lifted his head and saw that the sun had risen, he said,

“Mount up.”

He set off with us, and when the sun had become bright he dismounted and led us in the dawn prayer. One man from the company kept apart and did not pray with us. After concluding the prayer, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him,

“So-and-so, what prevented you from praying with us?”

He answered, “I was in a state of major ritual impurity and had no water.”

The Prophet said, “Make use of clean earth; it will suffice for you.” The man performed tayammum with the earth and prayed.

The Prophet then sent me on ahead with a small party to look for water, for we were suffering from intense thirst. As we were riding along we came upon a woman whose legs were dangling between two water-skins. We asked her, “Where can we find water?”

She replied, “Away, away! There is no water for you.”

I asked, “How far is it between your people and the water?”

She said, “A day and a night’s journey.”

We said, “Come with us to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.”

She asked, “And what is the Messenger of Allah?” We did not leave the matter in her hands; instead we took her along until we brought her face to face with the Messenger of Allah

وَجْهُ الصُّبْحِ عَرَّسْنَا، فَغَلَبَتْنَا أَعْيُنُنَا، حَتَّى بَزَغَتِ الشَّمْسُ، فَكَانَ أَوَّلَ مَنِ اسْتَيْقَظَ مِنَّا أَبُو بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقُ، وَكُنَّا لَا نُوقِظُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مِنْ مَنَامِهِ، حَتَّى يَكُونَ هُوَ الَّذِي يَسْتَيْقِظُ؛ لِأَنَّا لَا نَدْرِي مَاذَا يَحْدُثُ لَهُ فِي نَوْمِهِ، ثُمَّ اسْتَيْقَظَ عُمَرُ فَجَعَلَ يُكَبِّرُ حَتَّى اسْتَيْقَظَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَلَمَّا رَفَعَ رَأْسَهُ وَرَأَى الشَّمْسَ قَدْ بَزَغَتْ. قَالَ: ارْتَحِلُوا. فَسَارَ بِنَا حَتَّى إِذَا ابْيَضَّتِ الشَّمْسُ، نَزَلَ فَصَلَّى بِنَا الْغَدَاةَ، فَاعْتَزَلَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الْقَوْمِ لَمْ يُصَلِّ مَعَنَا، فَلَمَّا انْصَرَفَ قَالَ لَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: يَا فُلَانُ، مَا مَنَعَكَ أَنْ تُصَلِّيَ مَعَنَا؟ قَالَ: أَصَابَتْنِي جَنَابَةٌ وَلَا مَاءَ. فَقَالَ لَهُ: عَلَيْكَ بِالصَّعِيدِ، فَإِنَّهُ يَكْفِيكَ. فَتَيَمَّمَ بِالصَّعِيدِ فَصَلَّى، ثُمَّ عَجَّلَنِي فِي رَكْبٍ بَيْنَ يَدَيْهِ يَطْلُبُ الْمَاءَ، وَقَدْ عَطِشْنَا عَطَشًا شَدِيدًا. فَبَيْنَمَا نَحْنُ نَسِيرُ إِذَا نَحْنُ بِامْرَأَةٍ سَادِلَةٍ رِجْلَيْهَا بَيْنَ مَزَادَتَيْنِ، فَقُلْنَا لَهَا: أَيْنَ الْمَاءُ؟ فَقَالَتْ: إِيهَاهْ إِيهَاهْ لَا مَاءَ لَكُمْ. فَقُلْتُ: كَمْ بَيْنَ أَهْلِكِ وَبَيْنَ الْمَاءِ؟ قَالَتْ: مَسِيرَةُ يَوْمٍ وَلَيْلَةٍ. قُلْنَا: انْطَلِقِي إِلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ. قَالَتْ: وَمَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ؟ فَلَمْ نُمَلِّكْهَا مِنْ أَمْرِهَا شَيْئًا، حَتَّى انْطَلَقْنَا بِهَا، وَاسْتَقْبَلْنَا بِهَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ
