So I went back to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, “O Messenger of Allah, I found nothing in it except a single drop clinging to the narrow mouth of a shriveled skin; if I were to pour it out, the dry leather itself would drink it up.”
He said, “Go and bring it here.” I brought it to him, and he took it in his hand, uttering words I could not make out while pressing the skin with his fingers. Then he handed it to me and said, “Jabir, call for the large bowl of the caravan.”
I called out, “Bring the caravan’s bowl!” It was brought, carried by men, and I set it in front of him. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, placed his hand in the bowl and said, “Take it, Jabir; pour over me and say, ‘In the name of Allah.’” I poured the water, saying, “In the name of Allah,” and I saw water gush forth from between his fingers, peace and blessings be upon him, until the bowl surged and swirled about until it was full.
He said, “Jabir, announce that whoever needs water should come.” People came and drew water until they had all quenched their thirst. Then I asked, “Is there anyone left who still needs water?” The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, lifted his hand from the bowl—and it was still full.
After “who said:” add: “I was with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, on a journey, and we travelled through the night;”
