—he said, “Then I drove my sword into his belly until it came out through his back, and I knew that I had finished him off. I began opening the doors—one after another—until I reached a staircase. Thinking I had stepped onto the ground, I put my foot down, but it was a moon-bright night and I fell, breaking my leg. I wrapped it with my turban,
and went on until I sat by the outer gate, saying, ‘I will not leave until I know whether I have really killed him or not.’ When the rooster crowed, a herald mounted the wall and proclaimed, ‘I announce the death of Abū Rāfiʿ!’
I hurried back to my companions and told them, ‘Quick, away, away! Allah has slain Abū Rāfiʿ!’
We returned to the Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—told him what had happened, and he said, ‘Stretch out your leg.’ I stretched it out, and he wiped over it; it was as though I had never suffered any pain at all.”
