on a journey when a man entered a woodland thicket and took out the egg of a ḥumrah (a small red-bird). The mother bird came flapping above the head of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and his Companions. He asked, “Which one of you has distressed this creature?”
A man from the group replied, “I took its egg.”
He said, “Return it—out of mercy for her.”
Al-Ḥākim records in his Ṣaḥīḥ, on the authority of Safīnah, the freedman of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: “We set sail on the sea in a ship, but the vessel broke apart. I clung to one of its planks, and it cast me onto a reed-bed in which there was a lion; nothing startled me except him.”
