Ibn Masʿūd likewise related: “I saw the moon split into two halves in Mecca before the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, left the city—one half above Mount Abū Qubays and the other above al-Suwaydāʾ. The disbelievers of Quraysh, the people of Mecca, said, ‘This is sorcery with which the son of Abī Kabsha has bewitched you. Ask the travelers; if they have witnessed the same thing you saw, then he has spoken the truth, but if they have not, it is only magic.’” He added, “The travelers were questioned when they arrived from every direction, and they said, ‘We did indeed see it.’” Reported by al-Bukhārī and Muslim.
