Anas ibn Mālik also said: “The people of Mecca asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, to show them a sign, so the moon split into two parts.”
Al-Tirmidhī transmits this report with the additional wording: “…and the verse was revealed: ‘The Hour has drawn near and the moon has split’ (Q 54:1) up to His saying, ‘persistent magic’ (Q 54:2).” That is, “persistent” (mustamirr) means “vanishing.”
In the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections Ibn Masʿūd further relates: “During the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, the moon split into two halves, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, ‘Bear witness.’”
