In Sahih al-Bukhari it is related:
“When the Prophet ﷺ dispatched the army for the expedition of Muʾtah, he placed Zayd ibn Ḥarithah in command and said, ‘If he is killed, then Jaʿfar (will lead); if he is killed, then ʿAbd Allah ibn Rawāḥah.’
Al-Bukhari transmits—on the authority of Anas ibn Mālik—that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ announced to the people the deaths of Zayd, Jaʿfar, and Ibn Rawāḥah before any news of them had reached Medina. He said, ‘Zayd took the standard and was struck down; then Jaʿfar took it and was struck down; then ʿAbd Allah ibn Rawāḥah took it and was struck down,’ while the eyes of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were streaming with tears. ‘Then Khalid ibn al-Walid took it— a sword from among the swords of Allah—until Allah granted them victory.’"
