to kill him.
Musʿab ibn ʿUmayr of the Banū ʿAbd al-Dār interposed himself, shielding the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—with his own body, and Ubayy struck him down, killing Musʿab. The Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—then caught sight of the collarbone of Ubayy ibn Khalaf through a gap between the overlap of his coat of mail and his helmet. He thrust his spear into it, and Ubayy toppled from his horse, though no blood issued from the wound. His comrades hurried over, lifted him up while he bellowed like a bull,
and they said, “What makes you panic? It is only a scratch!”
He reminded them of the Messenger of Allah’s words: “I shall kill Ubayy.” Then he swore, “By Him in Whose hand is my soul, had what I am suffering now been inflicted upon the people of Dhī al-Majāz, they would all have perished.”
