“…I will certainly place this banner tomorrow in the hand of a man who loves Allah and His Messenger, and whom Allah and His Messenger love; through him Allah will grant victory.” And that is exactly what happened.
In the two Ṣaḥīḥs it is also narrated from Abū Hurayrah who said:
“We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, at Ḥunayn. He pointed to a man who claimed to be a Muslim and said, ‘This man is among the people of the Fire.’ When the fighting started, the man fought with great intensity and was wounded.
Someone said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, the man to whom you just declared, “He is from the people of the Fire,” has fought fiercely today and has been killed.’
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, replied, ‘He is headed for the Fire.’ Some of the Muslims were almost shaken by this.
While they were still discussing it, they were informed: ‘He has not died but has suffered a severe wound.’ Later that night, unable to bear the pain of his injuries, he took his own life. When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was told of this, he said, ‘Allah is the Greatest! I bear witness that I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger.’
He then ordered Bilāl to announce to the people: ‘No soul will enter Paradise except a Muslim soul, and Allah indeed supports this religion even through a sinful man.’
And Sahl ibn… also transmitted the same report.
