Then the Muslims mounted a second expedition against the city during the caliphate of ʿAbd al-Malik. His son Maslama led the campaign; they besieged it for several years and built a mosque there.

In the two Ṣaḥīḥ collections it is related from Anas who said:

“The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, used to visit Umm Ḥarām bint Milḥān and she would feed him. Umm Ḥarām was the wife of ʿUbadah ibn al-Ṣāmit. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, once entered her house, she offered him food, and then began to pick through his hair for lice. He fell asleep and then awoke laughing.

She asked, ‘What makes you laugh?’

He replied, ‘A company of my community was shown to me, sailing upon the waves of this sea—kings upon thrones, or like kings upon thrones.’

Umm Ḥarām said, ‘Pray to Allah to make me one of them.’ He supplicated for her, then laid his head down and slept once more; when he awoke he was again laughing.

She asked, ‘What makes you laugh?’

He said:”

ثُمَّ غَزَاهَا الْمُسْلِمُونَ مَرَّةً ثَانِيَةً فِي خِلَافَةِ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ غَزَاهَا ابْنُهُ مَسْلَمَةُ، وَحَصَرُوهَا عِدَّةَ سِنِينَ، وَبَنَوْا فِيهَا مَسْجِدًا. وَفِي الصَّحِيحَيْنِ عَنْ أَنَسٍ قَالَ: «كَانَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَدْخُلُ عَلَى أُمِّ حَرَامٍ بِنْتِ مِلْحَانَ فَتُطْعِمُهُ، وَكَانَتْ أُمُّ حَرَامٍ تَحْتَ عُبَادَةَ بْنِ الصَّامِتِ فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَطْعَمَتْهُ، وَجَعَلَتْ تُفَلِّي رَأْسَهُ، فَنَامَ ثُمَّ اسْتَيْقَظَ وَهُوَ يَضْحَكُ، فَقَالَتْ: مِمَّ تَضْحَكُ؟ فَقَالَ: عُرِضَ عَلَيَّ نَاسٌ مِنْ أُمَّتِي يَرْكَبُونَ ثَبَجَ هَذَا الْبَحْرِ مُلُوكًا عَلَى الْأَسِرَّةِ أَوْ مِثْلَ الْمُلُوكِ عَلَى الْأَسِرَّةِ. فَقَالَتْ أُمُّ حَرَامٍ: ادْعُ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَجْعَلَنِي مِنْهُمْ، فَدَعَا لَهَا، ثُمَّ وَضَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَنَامَ، ثُمَّ اسْتَيْقَظَ، وَهُوَ يَضْحَكُ، فَقَالَتْ: مِمَّ تَضْحَكُ؟ فَقَالَ:
