until you meet me at the Basin.’
After his passing they did in fact encounter people who appropriated things for themselves and withheld the community’s rights.
Al-Bukhari and Muslim also relate that he said:
‘After me there will arise governors who will demand their due from you while withholding your due from them.’
They asked, ‘What do you command us to do, O Messenger of Allah?’
He replied, ‘Give them their due and ask Allah for your due.’
In the two Ṣaḥīḥs it is likewise reported that he secretly spoke to Fāṭimah during the illness in which he died and said to her, ‘I shall be taken in this illness.’ He then told her that she would be the first of his family to follow him. In another wording he informed her that she would be the leader of the women of the believers.
Al-Bukhari and Muslim also transmit from ʿĀʾishah who said: The Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said, ‘The one among you who will join me the soonest is the one with the longest hand.’ She continued, ‘So we began measuring which of us had the longest hand, and the one with the longest hand turned out to be Zaynab, because she used to work with her own hands and give in charity.’
