and it came about exactly as He had foretold and promised. The Exalted said:

“Say: If all mankind and the jinn were to gather together to produce the like of this Qur’an, they could never produce its like.” (Al-Isrāʾ 88)

—and it turned out just as He said.

The Exalted likewise said:

“If you are in doubt about what We have sent down to Our servant, then produce a single surah like it.” (Al-Baqarah 23)

and up to His words:

“But if you do not—and you will never be able to—then guard yourselves against the Fire whose fuel is people and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.” (Al-Baqarah 24)

He thus declared that they would never succeed, and so it occurred exactly as He had declared.

He also informed that He said to the Messiah:

“And I will place those who follow you above those who disbelieve until the Day of Resurrection.” (Āl ʿImrān 55)

—and it happened just as He informed.

And He revealed in Mecca:

وَكَانَ كَمَا أَخْبَرَ وَوَعَدَ، وَقَالَ تَعَالَى: {قُلْ لَئِنِ اجْتَمَعَتِ الْإِنْسُ وَالْجِنُّ عَلَى أَنْ يَأْتُوا بِمِثْلِ هَذَا الْقُرْآنِ لَا يَأْتُونَ بِمِثْلِهِ} [الإسراء: ٨٨] . وَكَانَ كَمَا أَخْبَرَ. وَقَالَ تَعَالَى: {وَإِنْ كُنْتُمْ فِي رَيْبٍ مِمَّا نَزَّلْنَا عَلَى عَبْدِنَا فَأْتُوا بِسُورَةٍ مِنْ مِثْلِهِ} [البقرة: ٢٣] إِلَى قَوْلِهِ: {فَإِنْ لَمْ تَفْعَلُوا وَلَنْ تَفْعَلُوا فَاتَّقُوا النَّارَ الَّتِي وَقُودُهَا النَّاسُ وَالْحِجَارَةُ أُعِدَّتْ لِلْكَافِرِينَ} [البقرة: ٢٤] فَأَخْبَرَ أَنَّهُمْ لَنْ يَفْعَلُوا، وَكَانَ كَمَا أَخْبَرَ. وَأَخْبَرَ أَنَّهُ قَالَ لِلْمَسِيحِ: {وَجَاعِلُ الَّذِينَ اتَّبَعُوكَ فَوْقَ الَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا إِلَى يَوْمِ الْقِيَامَةِ} [آل عمران: ٥٥] ، وَكَانَ كَمَا أَخْبَرَ. وَأَنْزَلَ فِي مَكَّةَ:
