“When the Inevitable Event comes to pass, none shall deny its occurrence: it will abase some and exalt others. When the earth is shaken with a violent shaking and the mountains are reduced to crumbling dust, so that they become scattered particles, you will be divided into three groups: the People of the Right—what are the People of the Right?—and the People of the Left—what are the People of the Left?—and the foremost, the foremost: they are the ones brought near.” [al-Wāqiʿah: 1]
He—exalted is He—then describes the state of these three categories at the Greater Resurrection, and at the close of the surah He says:
“So why, when the soul reaches the throat while you watch—and We are nearer to him than you, though you do not perceive—if you are not to be requited, then bring it back, if you are truthful. Now, if he is one of those brought near, for him is ease, fragrance, and a Garden of Bliss. If he is one of the People of the Right, then ‘Peace be upon you’—a greeting from the People of the Right. But if he is among the deniers, the astray, then his hospitality is scalding water and a roasting in Hellfire.” [al-Wāqiʿah: 83]
