Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-MasīhIbn Taimiya

Al-Tiyālisi transmits—through a sound chain—from Ibn Masʿūd, who said:

“The Prophet once lay down on a woven mat, and the mat left marks on his skin. I began gently wiping them away and said, ‘May my father and mother be ransomed for you, O Messenger of Allah! If only you had let us know so that we could to spread something for you to sleep on that would protect you from this.’

He replied, ‘What have I to do with this world? My relationship to this world is no more than that of a traveler who sought shade under a tree, then went on his way and left it behind.’”

Al-Ḥākim likewise narrates it in his Ṣaḥīḥ from Ibn ʿAbbās, mentioning that ʿUmar entered upon the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—and related something to the same effect.
