and a measure of qaraz (acacia pods) amounting to roughly two sāʿs, and I noticed a small afīq (leather water-skin) hanging up. My eyes filled with tears, whereupon the Messenger of Allah said, “What makes you weep, Ibn al-Khattab?”
I replied, “O Messenger of Allah, why should I not weep when you are Allah’s elect, His Messenger, the choicest of His creation, yet this is your entire storehouse, while the foreigners—Chosroes and Caesar—revel amid orchards and rivers!”
He said, “Are you in doubt, Ibn al-Khattab? Those are people whose good things have been hastened for them in the life of this world.” In another narration he added, “Are you not content that they have this world, while the Hereafter is ours?”
I said, “Indeed.” He replied, “Then praise be to Allah, Mighty and Majestic.” I said, “I seek Allah’s forgiveness.”
Muslim also relates from Abū Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah—peace and blessings be upon him—supplicated: “O Allah, make the provision of the family of Muhammad only what suffices them.”
