do such a thing would fall upon me alone and not upon them. So release his neighbors to him.”
Imām Aḥmad, Abū Dāwūd, and al-Tirmidhī also report from Anas ibn Mālik:
“No person was dearer to them than the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him; yet whenever they saw him they would not stand up, because they knew how much he disliked that.”
This version comes through ʿAbd al-Raḥmān ibn Mahdī—who said, “Hammād ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Ḥumayd, from Anas.”
Abū Nuʿaym, Abū Shaykh, and others likewise transmit—on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās—that:
“Allah sent an angel to His Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, together with Gabriel. The angel said, ‘Allah has given you the choice: to be a servant-prophet or to be a king-prophet.’”
