by Allah, there is no deity but Him, the One who sent down the Torah to Moses: do you know that a man’s fluid is thick and white, whereas a woman’s fluid is thin and yellow, and that whichever of the two predominates, by Allah’s permission, the child—and the child’s resemblance—follows it?”
They answered, “Indeed, by Allah, yes.”
He said, “O Allah, bear witness.”
He continued, “I adjure you by Allah—there is no deity but He—who sent down the Torah to Moses: do you know that this Prophet’s eyes sleep while his heart does not sleep?”
They replied, “Indeed, by Allah, yes.”
He said, “O Allah, bear witness.”
They then said, “Now tell us who your guardian among the angels is; after that we shall either join you or leave you.”
He said, “My guardian is Gabriel, peace be upon him, and Allah has never sent a prophet without making Gabriel his guardian.”
They said, “Then we will leave you. Had it been someone else, we would have followed you and believed in you.”
He asked, “What is preventing you from believing?”
They replied, “He is our enemy among the angels.”
So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed:
“Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel, it is he who has brought it down upon your heart by Allah’s permission, confirming what came before it…” (al-Baqarah 97),
up to His statement: “…for Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers.” (al-Baqarah 98).
