you people are calling a renegade (ṣābiʾ)?” He pointed at me and said, “This is the renegade!” Instantly the people of the valley converged on me, hurling at me every clod of earth and every bone they could find until I collapsed unconscious.
The author then reproduced the remainder of the incident and the details of his acceptance of Islam—exactly as transmitted in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim.
In the version recorded by al-Bukhārī on the authority of Ibn Abbas it is related that
“Abu Dharr dispatched his brother, saying, ‘Bring me clear information about this man who claims that news is brought to him from heaven. Listen to what he says and then come back to me.’ So his brother set out, reached Mecca, and heard some of the Prophet’s words. When he returned to Abu Dharr he said, ‘I found him commanding noble character, and what he says is certainly not poetry.’ Abu Dharr replied, ‘You have not answered what I wanted to know.’ He therefore packed provisions, slung over his shoulder a waterskin, travelled to Mecca, and went straight to the mosque…,” and the rest of the report was narrated in full.
Jabir ibn ʿAbd Allah also narrated: “The notables, together with Abu Jahl, said, ‘This affair has now got the better of us…’”
