—for memorization—so that the very heaven had to be placed under guard lest anyone steal a single word of it. The Zabur (Psalms) merely followed the legislation of the Torah, and in the same way the Gospel is a branch that grows out of the Torah. No fully independent scripture was ever revealed except the Torah and the Qur’an, as He, Exalted is He, says:
“Say, ‘Then bring a Book from Allah that offers better guidance than these two and I will follow it, if you are truthful’” (al-Qasas 49).
For this reason Allah—glorified be He—frequently pairs the Torah with the Qur’an, as in His statement:
“They did not value Allah as He deserves to be valued when they said, ‘Allah has not sent down anything to any human being.’ Say, ‘Who then sent down the Book that Moses brought as a light and guidance for people…’” (al-Anʿām 91),
up to His words,
“And this is a blessed Book that We have sent down, confirming what came before it” (al-Anʿām 92).
He also says:
“Is one who stands upon clear evidence from his Lord, followed by a witness from Him—and before it the Book of Moses, a leader and a mercy—[like one who rejects it]? Such people believe in it, whereas whoever from the factions disbelieves in it, the Fire will be his appointed place” (Hūd 17).
