Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-MasīhIbn Taimiya

They said: There is no doubt among them that it is a name derived from praise, just as we say in our own language: ḍārib (one who strikes) and maḍrūb (one who is struck). As for those who take it to mean al-Muʿizz (the Honorer), no prophet has ever honored the people of monotheism and faith as Muḥammad did; hence he is more entitled to the name al-Muʿizz than any other human being.

The sense of al-Mukhalliṣ (the Savior) likewise fits him perfectly. The Messiah is the first savior, as stated in the Gospel, and it is common knowledge among the Christians that the Messiah—may Allah’s blessings be upon him—was called “Savior.” Thus the Messiah is the first Paraclete, and he gave glad tidings of another Paraclete, for he said:

“I will ask the Father to send you another Paraclete who will remain with you forever.”

This, then, is a promise of a second savior who will stay with them for all eternity, while the Messiah is the first savior. What descends into people’s hearts has never been called “Savior” or “Paraclete,” so the words of the Messiah must be interpreted only in his own language and according to the meanings familiar to those he addressed—the same rule applying to every prophet and, indeed, to every speaker.

He further described that second savior as one who would remain with them forever, and Muḥammad is that savior who brought a law that will last for all time and will never be abrogated.

Moreover, the Gospel—specifically the Gospel of John—relates that the Messiah said: “Urkoun of the world will come…”
