except that it becomes a trial for some of them.”
A man once asked Ibn ʿAbbās about the Almighty’s words: “He created seven heavens, and of the earth the like of them; His command descends among them” (Sūrat al-Ṭalāq 65:12). Ibn ʿAbbās replied, “What makes you feel safe that, were I to give you its detailed explanation, you would not fall into disbelief? And your disbelief would be your denial of it.”
The Messiah, peace be upon him, said: “I have much to tell you, but you cannot bear it now.” In this he was perfectly truthful. For that reason the Gospel contains with respect to the attributes of God, the realities of His Dominion, and the features of the Last Day nothing more than broad outlines; the same is true of the Torah, which mentions the Last Day only in general terms, even though Moses had paved the way for the Messiah. Yet the Messiah still told them, “I have much to tell you, but you cannot bear it now,” and then added, “But when the Spirit of Truth comes—the one who will guide you to all truth—,” and he also said, “He will inform you of everything that is to come and will make known to you all that belongs to the Lord.”
This shows that it is the Paraclete who will accomplish these things, not the Messiah himself. Likewise Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—guided people to every truth until Allah perfected the religion through him and completed His favor; thus he became the Seal of the Prophets, for nothing remained that anyone after him could bring. And Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—
