and said, “Seek forgiveness for your brother.”
In another narration from him—may Allah be pleased with him—he said:
“The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, announced the death of the Negus on the day he died and said, ‘Seek forgiveness for your brother.’ He then went out with the people to the open prayer-ground, they formed rows behind him, and he performed the funeral prayer for him, uttering 4 takbīrs.” Both al-Bukhārī and Muslim record this report.
Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allah—may Allah be pleased with them both—said, “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, offered the funeral prayer for Aṣḥama the Negus and pronounced the takbīr over him…”
قَالَ:
اسْتَغْفِرُوا لِأَخِيكُمْ.
وَعَنْهُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ،
قَالَ:
«نَعَى النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ النَّجَاشِيَّ يَوْمَ تُوُفِّيَ،
وَقَالَ:
اسْتَغْفِرُوا لِأَخِيكُمْ، ثُمَّ خَرَجَ بِالنَّاسِ إِلَى الْمُصَلَّى، فَصَفُّوا وَرَاءَهُ، وَصَلَّى عَلَيْهِ وَكَبَّرَ أَرْبَعَ تَكْبِيرَاتٍ»
. أَخْرَجَاهُ.
وَقَالَ جَابِرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُمَا:
«إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ صَلَّى عَلَى أَصْحَمَةَ النَّجَاشِيِّ فَكَبَّرَ عَلَيْهِ
