For this very reason, when Allah, exalted is He, declared:
“Pilgrimage to the House is a duty that people owe to Allah” (Q 3:97),
they retorted, “We will not make the pilgrimage.”
Allah therefore added, “Whoever disbelieves—Allah is surely independent of all creation” (Q 3:97).
Moreover, this exceptional exaltation that has raised the children of Ishmael above other peoples became evident only through the prophethood of Muhammad. That, in turn, proves that his prophethood is genuine and had been foretold.
Hence the description just mentioned applies to Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him—not to the Messiah. He is the one who was sent with a formidable law, who broke the power of earthly kings and nations until the lands, east and west alike, were filled with him and with his community. His authority endures, and no one has been able to eradicate it, whereas the rule of the Jews and the rule of the Christians has vanished from the choicest and central regions of the earth.
Along the same lines, another piece of glad tidings about Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him—appears in the words of “Shamʿūn,” according to a translation they themselves deem acceptable:
“God came with clear proofs from the mountains of Paran, and the heavens and the earth were filled with his glorification of God and with that of his community.”
