Thus it is evident that the wilderness in question is Faran (Paran), and that it was there that he and Abraham built the Sacred House—a sanctuary that has never ceased to receive pilgrims since the time of Abraham. Both Arabs and non-Arabs, prophets and others alike, have come to perform the pilgrimage there. Moses son of ʿImrān and Jonah son of Mattā were among those who made pilgrimage to it, as is related in the sound report transmitted by Ibn ʿAbbās:
“God’s Messenger—peace and blessings be upon him—passed through Wādī al-Azraq and asked, ‘Which valley is this?’ They answered, ‘This is Wādī al-Azraq.’ He said, ‘It is as though I can see Moses—peace be upon him—coming down from the mountain pass, his two fingers pressed against his ears, his voice raised to Allah in the talbiyah, passing through this very valley.’
He continued, ‘We then travelled on until we reached a pass.’ He asked, ‘What pass is this?’ They said, ‘Hirshā.’ He said, ‘It is as though I can see Jonah on a red she-camel, wearing a woollen cloak, the camel’s halter made of twisted fiber, passing through this valley while reciting the talbiyah.’”
