Section: The Testimonies of the Earlier Scriptures to Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him—and Some Examples
Among the points that must be kept in mind—and which we have already noted more than once—is that the testimony borne by the earlier scriptures to Muhammad, peace be upon him, takes one of two forms: either they testify directly to his prophethood, or they confirm the very same clear signs that he himself cited as proofs of his prophethood and the prophethood of those before him. Such testimony is binding evidence against the People of the Scripture and likewise against all others who are not People of the Scripture, from the various categories of polytheistic unbelievers and atheists. Allah has referred to this type of sign in several places in His Book, such as His words:
“Was it not a proof for them that it is recognized by the scholars of the Children of Israel?” (Qur’an 26:197).
