So Allah—exalted is He—revealed:

“When there came to them what they recognized, they refused to believe in it; so the curse of Allah is upon the disbelievers.” (Qur’an 2:89)

Abu al-‘Āliyah and others explained:

“The Jews, whenever they sought victory over the pagan Arabs through Muhammad, would pray, ‘O Allah, send the Prophet whom we find described in our scriptures, so that we may punish and kill the idolaters.’ Yet when Allah did send Muhammad and they realized he was not one of them, they rejected him out of sheer envy.”
