and rejected everything they had previously said about him. Thereupon Muʿādh ibn Jabal, Bishr ibn al-Barāʾ ibn Maʿrūr, and Dāwūd ibn Salamah declared, “O community of Jews, fear Allah and embrace Islam! You used to seek victory over us by invoking Muhammad—peace and blessings be upon him—while we were still idolaters. You assured us that he would be sent and even portrayed his features for us.”
Salām ibn Mishkam of Banū al-Naḍīr retorted, “Nothing recognizable has come to us, and he is not the man we were telling you about.”
مَا كَانُوا يَقُولُونَ فِيهِ
"، فَقَالَ مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ، وَبِشْرُ بْنُ الْبَرَاءِ بْنِ مَعْرُورٍ،
وَدَاوُدُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ:
"
يَا مَعْشَرَ يَهُودَ اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَأَسْلِمُوا، فَقَدْ كُنْتُمْ تَسْتَفْتِحُونَ عَلَيْنَا بِمُحَمَّدٍ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ - وَنَحْنُ أَهْلُ شِرْكٍ وَتُخْبِرُونَا بِأَنَّهُ مَبْعُوثٌ وَتَصِفُونَهُ بِصِفَتِهِ
"، فَقَالَ سَلَامُ بْنُ مِشْكَمٍ، أَخُو بَنِي النَّضِيرِ، "
مَا جَاءَنَا شَيْءٌ نَعْرِفُهُ، وَمَا هُوَ بِالَّذِي كُنَّا نَذْكُرُ لَكُمْ "..
