And this is found in Sūrah al-Anʿām, which is Meccan. In Sūrah al-Baqarah, which is Medinan, He says:

“We have certainly seen the turning of your face toward the heaven, so We shall surely turn you to a direction of prayer that pleases you. Turn, therefore, your face toward the Sacred Mosque, and wherever you may be, turn your faces toward it. Those who were given the Scripture know well that this is the truth from their Lord, and Allah is not unaware of what they do.

Even if you were to bring to those who were given the Scripture every sign, they would never follow your direction of prayer; nor are you to follow their direction, nor indeed are they followers of one another’s direction. Should you follow their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, you would then surely be among the wrongdoers.

Those to whom We have given the Scripture recognise him just as they recognise their own sons, yet a faction of them knowingly conceal the truth. The truth is from your Lord, so do not be among those who doubt.” (Q 2:144–147)

وَهَذَا فِي سُورَةِ الْأَنْعَامِ، وَهِيَ مَكِّيَّةٌ. وَقَالَ فِي سُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ - وَهِيَ مَدَنِيَّةٌ -: {قَدْ نَرَى تَقَلُّبَ وَجْهِكَ فِي السَّمَاءِ فَلَنُوَلِّيَنَّكَ قِبْلَةً تَرْضَاهَا فَوَلِّ وَجْهَكَ شَطْرَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ وَحَيْثُمَا كُنْتُمْ فَوَلُّوا وُجُوهَكُمْ شَطْرَهُ وَإِنَّ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ لَيَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّهُ الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَبِّهِمْ وَمَا اللَّهُ بِغَافِلٍ عَمَّا يَعْمَلُونَ - وَلَئِنْ أَتَيْتَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ بِكُلِّ آيَةٍ مَا تَبِعُوا قِبْلَتَكَ وَمَا أَنْتَ بِتَابِعٍ قِبْلَتَهُمْ وَمَا بَعْضُهُمْ بِتَابِعٍ قِبْلَةَ بَعْضٍ وَلَئِنِ اتَّبَعْتَ أَهْوَاءَهُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ مَا جَاءَكَ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ إِنَّكَ إِذًا لَمِنَ الظَّالِمِينَ - الَّذِينَ آتَيْنَاهُمُ الْكِتَابَ يَعْرِفُونَهُ كَمَا يَعْرِفُونَ أَبْنَاءَهُمْ وَإِنَّ فَرِيقًا مِنْهُمْ لَيَكْتُمُونَ الْحَقَّ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ - الْحَقُّ مِنْ رَبِّكَ فَلَا تَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الْمُمْتَرِينَ} [البقرة: ١٤٤ - ١٤٧] ..
