al-Makhzūmī, along with ʿAmr ibn al-ʿĀṣ ibn Wāʾil al-Sahmī, and drilled the two of them in their strategy. They said to them:

“Present each courtier with his gift before you speak to the Negus about those people. After that, lay the Negus’s own gifts before him, and then ask him to hand them over to you before he grants them an audience.”

She continued:

“So the two men set out and reached the Negus, while we were still living in the best of lands under the care of the best of neighbors. Not a single one of his courtiers was left without first receiving his gift before they approached the Negus. Then they said to every one of those courtiers, ‘They have indeed abandoned their religion…’”}
