The eighth point is to say to the People of the Book—specifically the Jews: When you were following Moses, peace be upon him, you were upon guidance and the religion of truth, and you were given victory. Then many events occurred among you, events you know full well, just as the Exalted One has said:
“Say, People of the Scripture, do you resent us for anything other than that we believe in Allah, in what has been sent down to us, and in what was sent down before, while most of you are defiantly disobedient? Say, shall I inform you of something worse than that as a recompense with Allah? It is those whom Allah has cursed, upon whom His anger has descended, of whom He made apes and swine, and who worshipped the false deity. Such are in the worst place and farthest astray from the right path.” ⦗al-Māʾidah 5:59–60⦘.
His words, Exalted is He, “and who worshipped the false deity” ⦗al-Māʾidah 5:60⦘ are coordinated with “whom Allah has cursed,” meaning: the very ones whom Allah cursed, upon whom He was angry, and who themselves worshipped the false deity. It is not part of the predicate of “made of them,” which would create a difficulty, as some people have supposed.
The People of the Book acknowledge that the Jews worshipped idols on several occasions and that they killed the prophets.
