Now, if it is said, “By their words, ‘admits no accident,’ they only meant an accident that is originated,” we reply: that answer demolishes their own division of existent things into substance and accident. The eternal attribute that inheres in Him is neither a substance nor something originated. If it is counted an accident, then an accident inheres in Him and He does admit it; and if it is not an accident, their whole division collapses.

This becomes clearer when one says to them: You have affirmed, “He is a living, speaking being”; you have affirmed, “He is three hypostases”; you have affirmed, “The one united with the Messiah is the hypostasis of the Word.” And in the Creed you declared: “We believe in one God, the Father Almighty, and in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all ages, true God from true God, begotten, not created, of His Father’s substance, equal to the Father in substance.” Then you further said, “The Lord is a substance,” and you said, “That which occupies space—”
