—the truth—thereby annulling their claim; yet they persist, saying: “The Holy Spirit is the third hypostasis,” just as they speak of “the Word,” which, in their doctrine, is the very divinity (lāhūt).
They have thus affirmed that the incarnation took place from both humanity (nāsūt) and divinity. On that basis they are compelled to acknowledge that the Messiah is at once the Son and the Holy Spirit, which would make of him two hypostases, not one—an inconsistency we have already exposed.
What matters here is this: when they say that the Lord—or one of His attributes—united with that which He created from Mary, He must first have had contact with Mary herself before becoming joined to what was created from her; and that, in essence, is what marriage and spousal union mean.
The majority of Christians maintain that Mary gave birth to the divinity just as she gave birth to the humanity, so that she is the “mother of the divinity.” In their prayers they say, “O Mother of God.”
The divinity Mary bore is, in their view, the Lord of the worlds, and they claim that this divinity united with the humanity from the moment that humanity was created in Mary’s womb—it did not occur after the birth.
If, then, it is admissible for the Lord of the worlds, according to them, to have a mother who in some manner gave birth to Him, it is even more conceivable that He could have a consort and wife; for whatever reason and revelation deem impossible in this is even more impossible in her being the mother of the divinity.
If it is allowed that the divinity has a mother—who is, after all, an origin—then for Him to have a companion who is a wife and an equal is nearer and more fitting; for it is well known that an offspring, which branches off and is generated from something, is by nature inferior to that from which it comes, whereas an equal is on the same level.
Accordingly, when they contend that the Lord of the worlds has a son who united with humanity and is His peer, equal to Him in essence, and they also say that the humanity is the mother of this Messiah who
