Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-MasīhIbn Taimiya

nor is any prominent Muslim scholar—or any well-known group among them—known to use the phrasing you attribute to the Muslims, namely your allegation that they say:

“Allah has two eyes with which He sees, two hands which He spreads forth, a shin, and a face that He turns toward every place, as well as a side.”

These critics have merely cobbled together scattered Qur’anic words, mishandling and misunderstanding them, and then have claimed that the Muslims employ their patchwork sentence. Yet nothing in the Qur’an, in its obvious sense, supports what they allege. Allah, exalted is He, says in His Book:

“The Jews say, ‘Allah’s hand is tied up.’ May their hands be tied up, and may they be cursed for what they have said. Rather, both His hands are wide open; He bestows as He wills.” ⦗al-Ma’idah: 64⦘

The Jews meant by their statement “Allah’s hand is tied up” that He is miserly. Allah refuted them, making clear that He is generous and never stingy, and informed them that both His hands are outstretched. He also says:

“Do not keep your hand chained to your neck, nor open it to its full extent, lest you end up blameworthy and exhausted.” ⦗al-Isrā’: 29⦘

Thus, the “outstretching of the two hands” denotes munificence and giving; it is not the bare, physical extension they have imagined. Because giving with the hand is done by opening it, it became conventional in the language to express generosity by speaking of an “outstretched hand.”
