—because everything they have proclaimed is wholly free of defect and shortcoming—
“and all praise belongs to Allah, Lord of the worlds” (Qur’an 6:45).

Thus the messengers portrayed Allah with attributes of perfection, declared Him exalted above every imperfection that contradicts perfection, and declared Him far above having any peer in any of those perfect attributes. They affirmed those attributes for Him in detail and negated from Him any likeness in summary, offering a detailed affirmation and a concise negation.

Whoever denies of Him an attribute He has affirmed for Himself is a negationist (muʿaṭṭil); whoever likens those attributes to the attributes of created beings is an anthropomorphist (mumāthhil). The negationist worships non-existence, whereas the anthropomorphist worships an idol.

Allah the Exalted has said,
“There is nothing whatsoever like unto Him” (Qur’an 42:11)—a rebuttal of the anthropomorphists—
“and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing” (Qur’an 42:11)—a rebuttal of the negationists.

لِسَلَامَةِ مَا قَالُوهُ مِنَ النَّقْصِ وَالْعَيْبِ. {وَالْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ} [الأنعام: ٤٥] . فَالرُّسُلُ وَصَفُوا اللَّهَ بِصِفَاتِ الْكَمَالِ، وَنَزَّهُوهُ عَنِ النَّقَائِصِ الْمُنَاقِضَةِ لِلْكَمَالِ، وَنَزَّهُوهُ عَنْ أَنْ يَكُونَ لَهُ مِثْلٌ فِي شَيْءٍ مِنْ صِفَاتِ الْكَمَالِ، وَأَثْبَتُوا لَهُ صِفَاتِ الْكَمَالِ عَلَى وَجْهِ التَّفْصِيلِ، وَنَفَوْا عَنْهُ التَّمْثِيلَ، فَأَتَوْا بِإِثْبَاتٍ مُفَصَّلٍ وَنَفْيٍ مُجْمَلٍ. فَمَنْ نَفَى عَنْهُ مَا أَثْبَتَهُ لِنَفْسِهِ مِنَ الصِّفَاتِ، كَانَ مُعَطِّلًا، وَمَنْ جَعَلَهَا مِثْلَ صِفَاتِ الْمَخْلُوقِينَ، كَانَ مُمَثِّلًا، وَالْمُعَطِّلُ يَعْبُدُ عَدَمًا، وَالْمُمَثِّلِ يَعْبُدُ صَنَمًا. وَقَدْ قَالَ تَعَالَى: {لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ} [الشورى: ١١] وَهُوَ رَدٌّ عَلَى الْمُمَثِّلَةِ، {وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ الْبَصِيرُ} [الشورى: ١١] وَهُوَ رَدٌّ عَلَى الْمُعَطِّلَةِ.
