nor al-Shafiʿi, Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Ishaq ibn Rahawayh, Ibn ʿUyaynah, or anyone else.
Rather, every one of them agrees that the Quran is revealed and uncreated; that Allah sent it with Gabriel, and Gabriel brought it down to His Prophet Muhammad—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—who then conveyed it to the people. The people recited it with their own articulations and voices, yet none of the servants’ actions or voices is eternal or uncreated. The speech of Allah, however, is uncreated.
The early generations never said, “The Quran is eternal.” When the Jahmiyyah and those of the Muʿtazilah and others who sided with them introduced the notion that it is a created entity separate from Allah, the Salaf and the leading imams replied: “It is the speech of Allah, uncreated.”
