Al-Jawāb as-Sahīh li-man baddala dīn al-MasīhIbn Taimiya

Yet these are nothing but gross, material bodies. Indeed, the greater part of your own theologians assert that the union took place with a body in which there was no spirit—before the breath of life was blown into it, after death, and before he rose from his grave.

Accordingly, your statement that

“it became a dwelling-place for God in His indwelling and self-concealment, because of its subtlety surpassing every other subtle created thing”

is an unlawful description and a false justification. For had it truly been a lodging for His subtlety, He would have dwelt only in the delicate human spirit; once you have affirmed a union with a dense physical body, your claim that “He united with the human being on account of its subtlety” is null and void.

Tenth Reply:

You also say,

“Know that nothing subtle in creation can be seen except within something dense, and that what is subtle among subtle things is seen only together with something denser than itself.”

We answer: Either, according to you, when God united with the Messiah people actually saw Him and witnessed Him, or no one saw Him at all.

If you say, “People did see and behold Him,” this contradicts sense-perception, revealed law, and sound reason alike. As for sense-perception: no one who looked at the Messiah ever observed anything that set him apart from other human beings—apart from the miracles that appeared through him, some of which were surpassed by greater wonders shown through others. They saw only the Messiah’s outward body; they did not see his inner organs—neither his heart, his liver, nor his spleen—let alone his spirit, much less
