“The leaders of delusion—by which I mean Nestorius, Artius, Dioscorus, Suras, Jacob Baradaeus, and their partisans—set out to uphold falsehood and the impossible. Refusing to return to the fear of Allah, they strayed from the path of truth through the corruption of their own reasoning and so plunged into an ocean of misguidance.
All of them alike, in the particular pit into which each has fallen, conceal their ignorance of the union of our Lord the Messiah’s divinity with His humanity. Every one of them becomes entangled in one aspect of that confusion and stubbornly clings to it.
I have therefore deemed it necessary to lay bare the nature of this confusion and to clarify it, so that you may see for yourself the unsoundness of their doctrine.
Among the greatest manifestations of Allah’s governance, the perfection of His justice, and the magnificence of His mercy is that He sent forth His creative Word—the very Word by which all things were brought into being. This Word, springing from His own essence, is uncreated; rather, it is begotten of Him before all ages. Allah has never existed without His Word and His Spirit, nor has the Word ever been detached from Him, from His creative Spirit, or from His essence.
Thus the creative Word of Allah descended, retaining its abiding, eternal, unchanging self-subsistence—never ceasing and never perishing—and it took flesh from Mary the Virgin while she was a pure maiden
